Bob Welch is a general columnist with Oregon’s second largest newspaper, The Register-Guard. Bob has been in the daily newspaper business 25 years, including stints as a columnist, features editor, features writer, sports editor, sportswriter and Sunday editor. He has been published in such magazines as Sports Illustrated, Reader’s Digest, Runner’s World, Focus on the Family, Moody, Christian Parenting and the Christian Reader. Bob is the author of four books, all published by Harvest House: The Things That Matter Most (2001), Stories from the Game of Life (2000), Where Roots Grow Deep: Stories of Family, Love & Legacies (1999), and "A Father for All Seasons" (1998). Father won the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association’s 1999 Gold Medallion Award for family and parenting. Welch has had stories published in more than a dozen other book compilations, including three in the Chicken Soup series and others in Stories for the Heart and Stories for a Man’s Heart. Bob has been the winner of more than three dozen writing awards, including first place in the 2000 National Society of Newspaper Columnist’s humor category for papers under 100,000 circulation; first place in the Oregon Newspaper Publisher Association's "Best Writing" category; and first place in the Evangelical Press Association's contest. Bob has been a judge for four years in the Evangelical Press Association’s annual magazine contest. He has also judged the Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists contest and numerous Oregon high school journalism contests. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and is presently an elder at Grace Community Fellowship, a non-denominational church in Eugene, Ore. Bob and his wife, Sally, have two sons: Ryan, 22, a recent graduate of Linfield College who married last July and is a graphic artist, and Jason, 19, a freshman at Linfield College.
